General Mills has recently demonstrated a commitment to sustainability by using the claim + marketing strategy.  According to General Mills (2016), they use health and wellness, sustainability, workplace, and community to make food people love.  Their goal are: to provide their customers with nutritious food that can be combined with an active lifestyle to live a healthier life; to promote social and environmental responsibility by using resources to protect such; to make sure employees have an inclusive, ethical, diverse, and safe work environment; to increase food security while they advance sustainable environment and agriculture to strengthen communities.

I consider General Mills to be trustworthy.  They are making progress in improving their health profile, their commitment to sustainable sourcing, and their stewardship efforts in regards to climate and water.  General Mills has more than 1,000 products that have been nutritionally improved. In addition, General Mills is committing by 2020 to 100% sustainably source all 10 of their priority ingredients.

General Mills has pledged a 30% cut over the next decade in their supply chain’s greenhouse gas emissions and they are also a part of The AgWater Challenge.  The AgWater Challenge is collaboration between General Mills and 6 other major brands who all committed to help improve their water stewardship in their communities. B.     In 2016, General Mills had a major recall on several of their flour brands due to E. coli contamination.  General Mills took all the appropriate actions to communicate the situation to the general public.  All products that were potentially contaminated were pulled until the source was determined.  General Mills was determined not to take any chances with the health of their customers.  They pledged to stay honest with the public about the situation.  General Mills educated their customers on how serious E. coli can be, the precautions customers should take, and the production process of the flour so customers can understand how the contamination could have possibly taken place.

General Mills has been successful in retaining and attracting their customers.  According to Digital’s 2017 article, General Mills started an email program to communicate with current and potential customers.  Millions of emails are sent out each week as an attempt to foster high value customer engagement. General Mills also customizes their emails to fit the needs of multiple customer groups.

A.    ConAgra is a company who has been slacking in producing sustainable products.  They are among the last of the food companies to attempt to become sustainable.  According to Simon, ConAgra has been sued for falsely marketing their products as all natural.  It was later found that at least 4 of their products that were claimed to be all natural were in fact not natural at all.

ConAgra should follow suit with other food companies making the push to toward sustainable products.  Doing so has proved beneficial for other companies.  Companies have shown constant increase in their brand image as well as increase sales and profit margins.  According to Grace Communications Foundation, benefits of an agriculture that is sustainable are environmental preservation, sustaining vibrant communities, and public health protection.
